July 21, 2022 - On this day, (Wednesday) we left the house about 7:30 am headed for Layton, UT.
The reason for the trip is to travel to Mesa, AZ to remodel the kitchen in the rental house that we own. The cabinets were selected in May 2022 when we were in Mesa and will be installed August 8-10, 2022. However, before the cabinets are installed, the existing cabinets have to be removed, the soffits extended over the refrigerator and the bar lowered to counter level. Fortunately, Scott Padgett will help facilitate this project.
Scott is the husband of my niece Stacy. They have a home remodel business and have done work for us in the past.
The drive to Layton was uneventful. We stopped in Onterio, OR for lunch and Twin Falls, ID for fuel. The price of fuel is a little less than in Washington but not much.
The temperature started climbing the further south we drove. By the time we arrived in Layton it was in the mid 90's at 8:00 pm.
Since we had a large lunch midafternoon we were not really hunger for dinner. We had some grapes, carrots and cookies that we had packed from home, so we had a quick bite and went to bed.
Friday (day 2) we took our time getting ready and having breakfast at the hotel. The breakfast was standard fare, cereal, omelets, meat, juice and of course coffee.
It is 704 miles to Mesa from Layton, mostly freeway. The first 2 hours took us to the other side of Salt Lake City. There is an HOV lane that we got into and stayed in until it was gone. Traffic moved between 75 and 80 mph, and we did not have to move in and out of traffic.
Had a couple of near misses along the way. We were on a two-lane road and a pick-up was passing in the opposite lane. Then on a four-lane road, John was moving to the inside lane and a car behind us was going faster than he thought and almost rear-ended us.
We stopped at the Cowboy Smokehouse in Panguich, UT for lunch. Panguich is a little town with a few restaurants, a couple of antique stores and about halfway between Salt Lake and Kanab, AZ. We have had lunch in Panguich at various restaurants through the years and even stayed in one of their few hotels. There was a rodeo happening when we drove through. It is also close to the Bryce Canyon entrance.
From Panguich we continued south toward Flagstaff, AZ. AZ does not recognize Daylight Savings Time so we gained an hour which means it will be 9 PM instead of 10 when we get the house.
When we reach Phoenix on Highway 17 from Flagstaff, we would like to believe we are home, but we still have about 50 miles to go. What a bummer.
So, it is 9 PM when we arrive to our AZ home. I told John it would be warm inside because the thermostat had been set to 84, to save on electricity. Little did we know how warm it would be. When we looked at the thermostat, it read 99, only because that is as high as the thermostat would read. It was cooler outside than inside.
John looked for broken wires to no avail. He checked the fuses, and they were blown. So, we went to Home Depot before they closed to purchase a couple of fuses. Cheap fix, if that were the problem.
Fortunately, Claudia, my sister, lives just a few blocks away. I called her and she invited us to come to her house to stay. We settled in for the night, not even having grapes and carrots for dinner.
Saturday, July 23 - John is always up early. He went over to our house to see if he could figure out what was wrong with the A/C. He called the company that had serviced it for us last summer. We were able to get a technician out today for an evaluation. Unfortunately, the compressor had gone out. The unit is only 3 years old, which brings up a lot of questions, but we will never know the answers. The compressor unit is under warranty but of course the labor and "other" misc. parts and refrigerant are not covered with the warranty. The company is supposed to come Tuesday, July 26 to install a new compressor. Hopefully that will be the end of that issue.
With a flashlight, John noticed that the swimming pool was very green. The person we had taking care of the pool notified us a couple of weeks ago that he was shutting down his business and would no longer be servicing the pool. So, Saturday morning, we went to the local Leslie's Pool store to purchase some chlorine and pool shock. John put it in Saturday evening, as instructed, and on Sunday it looked much better.
There are always things you (me) forget to pack when leaving for a period of time. Well, I forgot to pack additional bras that were hanging in the laundry room in Selah. So, Saturday was my day to purchase a couple of bras. I wanted to find the Jockey Outlet store. I had the address and the directions, however, the GPS had trouble. It kept wanting me to take an exit that was closed due to construction. Then, as an alternative, it led me to a road that was closed or did not exist. When I left home, the gas gauge said there was 78 miles left to empty. Accordingly, I should have had enough fuel to get me to Jockey, then to Fry's (Fred's) and then to the gas station.
Before I found Jockey, the fuel gauge was reading 35 miles left and I was getting nervous. Can you imagine running out of fuel on the freeway, in a city you don't know? So, I decided to stop for fuel. Drove into a Circle K station that has both gasoline and diesel. There was a bag over the gasoline handle but not the diesel. After trying to enter my card for payment the screen says I need to see the cashier. OK, I walk into the store, and she tells me the pumps 1,2, and 3 are out of order. So, I move the truck to another island to pump the diesel. To get the receipt, I have to return to the store again. I said something about maybe bagging the diesel handle as well, with not even a thank you. I was probably a bit irritable due to the temperature being 104.
I got back onto the freeway to find Jockey. The GPS instructed me to make a left hand turn onto 40th St. in the middle of the freeway. I had noticed a sign that would have led me to 40th off to the right, but I was too far to the left to get to that exit. So, I took the 32nd St. exit (without the help of the GPS), turned left to get back onto the freeway and then take the 40th St. exit. What an ordeal.
I found the outlet mall and was able to park in a covered parking area. Of course, that does not help too much with the heat build-up in the truck but helps keep the seats from blistering your backside when you return. All in all, it took me 1.5 hours to travel 30 miles. When I finally realized where I was, I could have taken I-202 directly to the outlet mall in about 30 minutes but instead the GPS took me over hill and dale.
Met the two nicest people at Jockey. I relayed my saga to them, and they gave me written directions on how to return home.
My next stop was Fry's to do some grocery shopping. It is much like Fred's, so it was not too frustrating. Because we are going to be without a kitchen for a couple of weeks, I tried to select items that could be made without too much preparation or could be cooked in an insta-pot, air fryer or a griddle.
Shopping done, I went to our house to drop off some items for John to use while he is working there and before the A/C gets fixed. Then the other items came back to Claudia's. Did I mention Claudia is not at home? They have a home in the mountains of AZ where they spend the summer, so it is just John and I staying in their home.
Sunday - July 24 - John was at the house this morning at 4:30 am. The mission was to open the windows and doors to cool the house down before the heat intensified. He got it down to 81.
John has moved the dishwasher, stove and microwave to the living room as well as emptying all of the cupboards. It is ready for he and Scott to start tearing out all of the cabinets and countertops tomorrow, Monday.
John and I spent the afternoon visiting a couple of close by antique stores. We just enjoy browsing. He spent the rest of the day napping, and I spent the day catching up on items that needed to be dealt with.
